Easy Sweet Coleslaw

You can’t have a cookout without coleslaw, and of the 2 recipes my family used growing up this one was always a hands down favorite! This is another recipe passed down from my grandparents, this time it was from Papa Bill, and his convenience store/grill/restaurant in South Carolina. A must for bbq sandwiches, great on hotdogs, great with fried foods and seafood as well! This is the one and done! If you only make one make this one!!!

Ingredients

  • 1 Head of cabbage

  • 1 1/4 Cup Real mayonaise (I use Dukes)

  • 1/2 Cup Sugar

  • 1/3 Cup Grated or diced carrots

  • 1/4 Cup Sweet relish (I use mt. olive)

  • 4 tsp Distilled white vinegar

  • 1/4 tsp Mustard powder

  • Salt to taste

Directions

  • Finely chop or grate your cabbage and carrots.
You can also get a bag of pre-shredded coleslaw mix at most grocers, just watch how much dressing you add!
  • Mix the vinegar, sugar, and mustard powder together in a mixing bowl until sugar dissolves.
  • Add in the mayo and relish.
If making ahead of time, this dressing can be stored in the refrigerator separate from the cabbage mixture until the day you plan to make the slaw.
  • Pour the dressing over the cabbage mixture stir to combine, and add salt as needed. It tastes the best if you chill in the refrigerator a couple of hours before serving!

Notes

  • If making ahead, keep dressing mix and cabbage mix separate and mix 2 or so hours before serving.
  • You can also add purple cabbage if wanted for more color!
  • If using a packaged coleslaw mix, you want to add about half the dressing, stir it in, then slowly add more as needed.
